Moving across Japan

Transportation in Japan is generally efficient and fast. During rush hour it can be crowded however it is the best way to reach your destination. If you live in a big city or metropolis, having a car is rather unnecessary as trains connect all over the country and buses run over large networks.

In small towns, there are less accessible options that make getting around more difficult. In this situation, it would be good to explore the option of buying/renting a car. Good to know if you are thinking about driving a car in Japan. All expats must have an international driver's license. You can buy this from a local association and it is valid for one year.

Now back to the public transport in Japan.

"Shinkansen" also know as super express trains. These trains connect almost every big city in Japan. They are very accessible for expats, tourists, and locals. Sometimes it is an even cheaper and faster way to get around than flying. These trains are owned by Japan Railways (JR), a ticket must be purchased at a JR station or a designated seller.

There are also regular express trains, which are even more accessible. You can buy a ticket right before you get on the train and you just have to pass it through a machine.

If you are staying for a while, you can also consider buying an electronic card and, you can recharge the card as often as you want.

Over to the busses. 

Not all areas have frequent bus routes, in smaller cities, Japanese will be the only language displayed. At most train stations there is a bus route that starts and sometimes you can find some sort of bus information boot that can help you know where to go.

Taxis are also a popular transport option if you live or work in a big city however the rates are quite expensive and run up quickly. For those who have never been to Japan, be aware to never close or open a taxi's door, this is something the driver controls. The drivers don't usually speak English, so if you decide to take a taxi, make sure you know your destination in Japanese.
